Roxanne was pregnant at the time of her killing. She was murdered because she chose to remain pregnant.
A 17-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison and four years probation for killing Roxanne Fernando in Winnipeg last February. It is the maximum possible youth sentence for murder.
Two other men aided the “youth” in killing and disposing of his former girlfriend and unborn child. They plead guilty.
The judge called the killing a “well-planned execution.”
Her choice – her baby – was not a factor in any of their sentences.
“Roxanne’s Law” (Bill C-510) was introduced as a Private Members Bill by Rod Bruinooge in 2010. The bill would have allowed pregnant women to press charges when they find themselves facing coercion to abort. The bill received little media attention, it was criticized by abortion rights activist Joyce Arthur who claimed it would eventually make abortion illegal, and ultimately, the Canadian government voted to dismiss even discussing it.
