On April 18th, 2020, the deadliest rampage in Canadian history took place in the province of Nova Scotia.
The attacks began as a case of domestic violence and spilled out into the community to result in what the press reported as killing 22 people and injuring three others. But these reports didn’t account for the child that Kristen Beaton was pregnant with at the time.
Though it was illegally obtained guns used in the killing spree as is typical in gun crimes in Canada, the government used the tragedy to restrict law abiding gun owners rather than target violent criminals like the one responsible for the crime.
In contrast the need for a pre-born victims of crime law was never brought in the media discourse. And though pregnant women are twice as likely to become the victims of such violence, the crimes against the children they carry were permitted to continue being disregarded by Canadian law.
Kristen Beaton was a dedicated mother and health care worker. She was 33 years old when her and her pre-born child were slain.
