LATEST INFO: Feb 26, 2019 – Ex-pastor found guilty of manslaughter in death of pregnant wife
Karissa Grandine was 20 weeks pregnant with her daughter when she was killed. She was drugged and drowned in her bathtub. Her husband was sentenced to 14 years and eight months in prison (with four months time already served?) for manslaughter, but was released on $305, 000 bail as he appeals the verdict.
“We are outraged, we are angry and we are very sad,” Karissa’s younger sister, Hannah Darvin, said in an interview. “We came from the Philippines for a better life and the way justice has been administered in this case has been very shocking for us to deal with.”
“How can we trust a justice system that gives a convicted killer so much power?”
Karissa had nicknamed her daughter Jellybean.
The second trial began in early 2019.
On May 2nd, 2016, in Canadian Parliament, MP William Blair used this sentence as an example of case law where a woman’s pregnancy was considered an “aggravating circumstance” during sentencing. Blair failed to mention that Anna’s killer had – in reality – only served one month in prison and was (and still is) free on bail pending an appeal. Regardless, 14 years for killing a woman and her unborn child is hardly a shining example of severity in a criminal justice system. At least to people who aren’t MP William Blair.
Here is the 911 call from when he “discovered” his wife and daughter dead in the bathtub when he returned from a jog:
